Cultural Practices of Fascism(s) and Populism(s) from a Transatlantic Perspective
Book Launch.
Argentine historian Federico Finchelstein famously argued that the transnational dynamics of fascism and populist movements become clearer when viewed from the margins, because it was in Latin America – and not in Europe – where fascism and populism first intersected, with Argentine Peronism as the paradigmatic case. When adopting such a transatlantic perspective, how can cultural representations and practices both reflect and challenge the divisive “Us” versus “Them” rhetoric central to fascist and populist discourses? And how do cultural artefacts and practices memorialise, remediate, and oppose narratives of fascism(s) and populism(s), with the assumption that (anti)fascist art and activism still move along transatlantic trajectories? Exploring these questions, this event brings together editors, authors, scholars and activists for a roundtable discussion on the recent co-edited volume Transatlantic Practices of Fascism(s) and Populism(s) from the Margins. The Cultural Politics of “Us” versus “Them” (Reindert Dhondt, Monica Jansen and Maria Bonaria Urban, Routledge 2026). The speakers will also draw from their recent research and cultural practices to broaden the debate to include questions on how to take position “against the fascist creep” (Reid Ross).
Editors Monica Jansen (UU) and Maria Bonaria Urban (KNIR/ UvA) and authors Joost de Bloois (UvA), Julienne Weegels (UvA) and Jonas Staal (artist), will be joined by Rick Dolphijn (UU) and Frans Willem Lantink (UU).
The event is co-organised and moderated by students of the Research Master Comparative Literary Studies: Amber Bader, Dorien van Gerven, Eirini Arampatzi, Cathy Box, and Anouck Masse.
The volume is partially available in OA, thanks to co-funding by ICON, the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR), and the University of Antwerp.
